SALT Academy staff works closely with community groups in three provinces of Northwest Cambodia
to maintain and develop local football leagues.
All the players in the football league are taught life skill lessons before the weekly games. These games provide the teams with a chance to showcase what they have learned, provide a place for healthy competition, and encourage interaction with youth from other communities.
When developing teams, SALT helps form at least one boys’ team and one girls’ team from each community group or organization. The organization or group also identifies a potential young leader from within their community, who shows commitment and enthusiasm but lacks alternative opportunities, to serve as the team leader and undergo vocational training.
The different SALT leagues:
Regular-Season League: weekly games /teams, players /girls and boys teams / coached and trained at least once a week by SALT coaches / provides a place for healthy competition / encourages interaction with youth from other communities / life skill lessons for all players / winning team in each qualifies for a Championship Game taking place in Battambang
Futsal Rainy-Season League: Futsal league during the rainy season / played on small concrete field / 5 players a side / same teams from the football season have a chance to compete against each other again and continue training
Winter Cup Adult Competition: For adults and older youth within the community /goal: to promote football and find new groups, new coaches, and new referees who are interested volunteering
League Expansion: SALT organizes tournaments in Poipet and in Pailin / attracts many local groups to join in the sports program
